Farm Safety 4 Just Kids

Agriculture has long been recognized as an industry with an above-average rate of accidents and injuries. Farm children, as a result, face many risks of injury. Farm Safety 4 Just Kids (FS4JK) is a program that makes a difference in the lives of farm families by teaching rural children about safety.

Monsanto became a supporter of the FS4JK program when the Monsanto Fund started collaborating with FS4JK in 2001 by offering financial support. Since then, several Monsanto seed research and production sites have been actively involved in developing FS4JK chapters. We have 7 Monsanto locations with active chapters including Clarion, Beaman and Grinnell, Iowa, Mason City, Illinois, Windfall and Remington, Indiana and Matthews, Missouri.

In 2003, ten Monsanto locations worked to bring farm safety programs to their communities. Each location was provided with demonstrations and FS4JK resources, including the "Keep It Safe on the Farm" activity book, developed with funds from Monsanto. Nearly 1200 children participated in farm safety programs and thousands more were made aware of the program through TV and newspaper articles.

In 2004, a community action planner was developed for use by seed sites who have been involved in farm safety programs. The planner provides fact sheets, Public Service Announcements and safety information for use in media outlets. More programs are being planned in 15 locations and a Spanish-language brochure on farm safety is being developed.

We, at Monsanto, are committed to maintaining our core values, including a real commitment to safety. FS4JK is a great example of those values. We look forward to the future and we will continue to grow and enrich the programs in order to help keep farm children safe.
