Soybeans R&D Pipeline Products

1st Generation Insect-protected Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield® Soybeans

Method:
Biotechnology
Pipeline Progress:
Phase IV

This is the first-ever in-the-seed insect protection for soybeans, and is expected to offer an important technology for farmers who face significant yield loss due to insect damage. Insect-protected soybeans use the same Bt technology widely adopted in corn and cotton. The Bt trait is envisioned to be stacked with Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield® for excellent insect and weed control as well as yield enhancement.

Vistive® Gold Soybeans

Method:
Biotechnology and Breeding
Pipeline Progress:
Phase IV

Vistive® Gold soybeans combine breeding and biotechnology to provide soybean oil with mono-unsaturated fat levels similar to olive oil and the low saturate fat content of canola oil, which would allow the food industry to cost-effectively eliminate trans fats and significantly lower saturated fat content in food products. Vistive® Gold soybeans also significantly improve frying stability of the oil while maintaining the flavor and economics of soybean oil. Vistive® Gold would allow farmers to help meet the growing demand for healthier oils with a domestically produced soybean-based option.

Omega-3 Enhanced Soybeans

Method:
Biotechnology
Pipeline Progress:
Phase IV

Omega-3 soybeans are designed to produce oil with a heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acid content that provides the benefits of the omega-3 fatty acids traditionally found in fish. This product is similar to other soybean oil in taste and shelf life. Oil from these soybeans could be used as an ingredient in a wide range of food applications such as yogurt, granola bars and spreads. This should provide consumers new option for foods rich in omega-3 fatty acid – and a further opportunity for farmers to help deliver health benefits to consumers.

1st Generation Higher-Yielding Soybeans

Method:
Biotechnology
Pipeline Progress:
Phase III
Collaboration:
BASF

Higher-yielding soybeans are aimed at boosting the intrinsic yield potential of the soybean though insertion of key genes. The target for this product is a 6 to 10 percent yield improvement. This trait is expected to be stacked with Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield® and other traits in our soybean pipeline, providing additive yield boost over today Roundup Ready® soybean varieties.

2nd Generation Higher-Yielding Soybeans

Method:
Biotechnology
Pipeline Progress:
Phase I
Collaboration:
BASF

This is a second-generation product that would provide an upgrade to first-generation higher-yielding soybeans. This product is aimed at boosting the intrinsic yield potential of the soybean through insertion of genes and designed to increase yields.

2nd Generation Insect Protected Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield® Soybeans

Method:
Biotechnology
Pipeline Progress:
Phase I

This product is the second generation of insect-protected soybeans using the same Bt technology widely adopted in corn and cotton. This second-generation product, with at least two modes of action, will provide a wider spectrum of insect resistance and more durability of the insect control product.

Aphid-Resistant Soybeans

Method:
Breeding

Aphids, a soft bodied insect that pierces and sucks the sap out of plants, can cause yield losses as high as 50 percent in some fields. Aphid-resistant soybeans would be one way to help farmers protect and boost the yield potential on farm. Marker-assisted breeding is being used to develop aphid-resistant varieties that can be used across multiple environments.

Asian Soybean Rust-Resistant Soybeans

Method:
Breeding

Asian Soybean Rust is a devastating disease that can cause soybean yield losses as high as 80 percent. Current management strategies for this disease are limited to multiple applications of fungicides, which can be costly. Asian Soybean Rust-resistant soybeans are being developed through breeding and may help farmers reduce the number of fungicide applications required to control this disease while protecting yields.

Dicamba-Tolerant Soybeans

Method:
Biotechnology
Pipeline Progress:
Phase III

The addition of dicamba tolerance to the Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield® soybean platform would provide a highly effective and high-yielding weed management system. Dicamba is an economical herbicide that controls a wide spectrum of broadleaf weed species including tough-to-control and glyphosate-tolerant weeds. This product, stacked with Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield®, has demonstrated excellent weed control across seasons and environments.

High-Stearate Soybeans

Method:
Biotechnology
Pipeline Progress:
Phase I

High-stearate soybeans are designed with elevated levels of stearate to enhance the texture and reduce the levels of linolenic acid in soybeans for increased stability for many types of foods that require solid fat functionality. As consumer demand for healthier foods grows, this technology would offer farmers an opportunity to help meet this growing demand. While stearate is also a saturated fat, a growing body of nutritional evidence indicated that it is a heart-neutral type of saturated fat, since it does not elevate “bad cholesterol” in our bloodstream.

Soybean Nematode Resistance

Method:
Biotechnology
Pipeline Progress:
Phase I
Collaboration:
BASF

Soybean nematode resistance is a biotechnology approach to provide superior control of soybean cyst nematode (SCN) compared with current genetic sources of control available in commercial germplasm. When combined with Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield® this trait would provide farmers with improved control of the soybean cyst nematode pest while protecting the yield potential on the farm.
